Some different roles and responsibilities in music production...
Songwriter:
Day to day life - Writing melodies and lyrics.
Skills - Listening skills and good English as well as good communication and expressive skills.
Qualities and Responsibilities - Being Creative, Open Minded and able to market themselves.
Health and Safety Hazards: The temptation to excessively drink alcohol and take illegal drugs - many songwriters develop this bad habit. Also hearing damage if their music is too loud.
Session Musician:
Day to Day Life - Playing in a studio with people that they may have not met before
Skills - Good at playing instruments
Qualities and responsibilities - being good to work with and being able to work with different people, having a broad music theory knowledge.
Health and Safety Hazards: The temptation to excessively drink alcohol and take illegal drugs, as well as hearing loss due to inadequate ear protection when on playing on stage, working with other creative people could be volatile. Could get electrocuted from plugging in amps.
Backline tech/drum tech:
Day to day life: sets up and maintains instruments/drums backstage.
Skills: Good at maintaining instruments and has good knowledge of said instruments and their maintenance.
Qualities and Responsibilities: Thick skin, hard working, able to live out of a backpack, passionate and light minded.
Health and Safety Hazards: Heavy weight lifting and the risk that comes with it. Trip hazards as well as falls and electrocution.
Tour manager:
Day to day life: Looks after the band as they tour, oversee pay deposits and books the tour.
Skills: Good money management and assertiveness
Qualities and Responsibilities: confident, assertive, up front and positive.
Health and Safety Hazards: Accidents while being on an unmaintained stage or driving the car or bus.
Stage manager:
Day to day life: oversee every department during a live performance, for example costume, lights or pyrotechnics.
They work closely with the director to make sure that the show sounds the same, no matter where it is held.
Skills: Good communication skills and good leadership skills.
Qualities and Responsibilities: strong minded, assertive.
Health and Safety Hazards: They are responsible for everyones safety on stage - everyone's risk is their risk.
Studio manager:
Day to day life: Books studio and equipment for the band
Skills: Good leadership and knowledge of the studio and who performs what role.
Qualities and Responsibilities: delegating job roles and knowing what people are in the studio when.
Health and Safety Hazards: Responsible for everyones safety in the studio, which means that people's hazard in the studio is a hazard for them.
